5 Benefits That Come from Discovering Your Why & Living It

Life’s goal is to live with greater Freedom, Fulfilment, and Happiness. To do this, we need to ultimately decide on what that looks like for each of us and then go about discovering and developing our WHY from there. There’s that WHY word again, the most powerful word I know.

  • Leigh Martinuzzi| 3 Minute Thought: The Powerful Benefits of Feedback

“Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a mans growth without destroying his roots.” Frank A. Clark

Do I encourage feedback?  Feedback and criticism can be hard to swallow but, it’s essential if you want to make powerful improvements and progress in life. In this episode I share my thoughts on what feedback I choose to listen to, and how I handle and respond to it.

This is critical – Why? The reality we live in is directly a creation of how we choose to interact with it. There is a great quote by Charles R. Swindoll thats states, “life is 10% of what happens and 90% of how you react to it.” As this relates to feedback I suggest how you react to feedback is more important than the feedback itself.

I value my continual self-improvement. In efforts to become my best potential in life I listen to constructive feedback and draw from it the powerful benefits it can have.

“Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” Ken Blanchard.

Enjoy this thought. Peace, passion & purpose.

  • My Practice of Elimination – 5 for 5: Part 2

By Leigh Martinuzzi (revised – original post 07.09.2014)

Last week I revised an article I wrote on a practice I developed a few years back. To be honest, nothing too spectacular, but rather an exercise of clearing out the rubbish and replacing it with more good. You can check out the post here.

It came out of necessity. As I found myself halfway through the year, I began to notice patterns creeping back into my daily life. Things that I believed were disrupting the accomplishment of my goals. In reflection, I realised this and began to do work to remove what wasn’t working and improve on what was. (more…)

  • 5 Things That I’ll Be Doing This Festive Season

The “silly season” as they call it can be a chaotic time for many. There is so much going on, and as the changes to our routines are disrupted, we can experience anxiety, stress, unease and even disappointment or a little unhappiness. Of course, nobody wants this shit to infiltrate what’s meant to be an enjoyable, jolly time of the year, but it does, and I get it!

Over the years I have tried to relax, and although not always successful I feel I have learnt a thing or two. Unmet expectations are what I see as the most significant problem. We head into the festive season with beautiful visions of how things will be and yet when they don’t play our as expected; we become shitty, annoyed, and dissatisfied. The same is valid for how most of us experience life, right? (more…)

What if you found the courage to do what you really wanted to do and doing it changed your whole life?” Shannon L. Alder

I have found myself faced with a tough decision. It is causing me a level of discomfort, uncertainty, and unease. In absolute honesty, it’s not all that important, and for that reason, I am not highly stressed or concerned as I am confident that what eventuates will be as it should be. (more…)

“wisdom isn’t a body of information. It’s the moral quality of knowing what you don’t know and figuring out a way to handle your ignorance, uncertainty, and limitation.” David Brooks

This books studies and shares insights into what builds solid character. As David suggests this book is less about creating resume virtues and more so about creating eulogy virtues. The legacy of one’s life will be praised and remembered not for their successes but more so for their character. This book is not written to inspire and highlight success strategies, it is written for the fundamental purpose to inspire and highlight why character is paramount.

Brooks views on the modern age is that many of us are driven by individualistic pursuits characterised by a desire for success. This nature he refers to is the Adam 1 that exists within all of us, some more predominantly so than others. The other nature is that of Adam 2, driven with desire to obtain and embody greater moral qualities. (more…)

Only What Can Suffer Is Real

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” Helen Keller

If only that which can suffer is real how does that assist us  to focus and act on only what is truly important. For what can not suffer that causes us suffering may been a unwise use of our time. A tricky thought but one that I feel has benefits. What are your thoughts?

  • 335: Leigh Martinuzzi | Why We Should Treat Our Life Like a Holiday

Life like a holiday. I can hear the questions and doubt already. “Yeah right! How?” “It’s a nice idea but some of us have to work.” “Easy said than done.” For whatever the excuse, reason or doubt I would suggest it is exactly for those reasons that we must seek to approach life more like a holiday.

The hunter-gatherers travelled regularly, moving from one place to the next. This allowed them to continually change their environments and routines. I think this helped keep life interesting. The agricultural age forced us to remain put. Not great for the soul, sanity or our level of our happiness. (more…)

  • Do You Find Yourself Always Waiting in Life? 5 Rules To Improve Your Waiting

Do You Find Yourself Always Waiting in Life? 5 Rules To Improve Your Waiting

I was standing in line wondering if it was worth the wait. How often do you have that feeling? I see queues everywhere! I am an impatient man and to me waiting sucks!

There a lines everywhere, would you agree? I see them at the bus stops, at the cookie stand, at the movies, at the bathroom, I see them even when people are waiting to give away their money to pay a bill. Fucking seriously! Why wait?

Ok, so I get that there may be some excitement that comes by waiting. I have been in queues at amusement parks and see the love and excitement on the young children’s faces as they eagerly prepare themselves for the fright of their day.  That’s time well spent. But all that time spent when these feelings don’t exist to me is wasted time. Here is what I know about waiting and this relates to waiting for your life to begin.

#1. Waiting is just delaying what you want to eventuate.

#2. Waiting is depriving yourself of life.

#3. Waiting is a disrespectful use of time.

#4. Waiting is a belief that whatever will come will give your more.

#5. Waiting is only a step closer to the end.

I could go on but I will refrain. I have no patience. I like to have things when I want it and the time spent getting there needs to be well used. If not, then it is the old case of sacrifice now for hopeful benefits to come. I believe in waiting we are not purposeful and this is an unwise way to use the time that we have been given.

Think about it. When in did our ancestors wait and what did they wait for? The further you go back the more you might realise that perhaps they didn’t wait. This I can only attribute to the fact that they didn’t have all the privileges that are thrown in our face every moment these days.

They may have waited for the rains to stop, they may have waited for the trees to bare fruit, they may have waited for new life. What they didn’t do is wait for an extrinsic factor of life in hope that it would bring them more. I feel I have to be careful in my wording here. There is no need to wait for a moment that will raise your levels happiness. Happiness is already there.

The reason why most of us wait is for this pure reason. We want to have that feeling. A feeling of relief, a feeling of satisfaction. We want to experience a certain thing or we want to realise a certain state. Yet in waiting we delay! We may miss opportunities that could have been had by not wasting our time standing idly in line.

I was really early arriving at the airport, the reason why I write this post. I thought about the use of time as it relates to being somewhere that I don’t need to be well ahead of time. Then the thought came to me. I checked-in. I was the first there and had no wait time at all. This was a first. Previously my thought was to arrive right before check-in closed, that way I would be saving time and cursing through the process with little delay. This is not the case.

The longer you wait the longer the queue and therefore the longer the wait. I have found myself over and over again waiting in lines to catch a plane but on this day it was different. I got to check-in quick, wasting no time in lines and therefore allowing more time for myself. It is apparent that I had a few hours prior to boarding but those few hours were mine to have, not to be spent in a line. I can use that time with much more grace and purpose.

    Here is what to do.

#1. Ask yourself why. Why is it so important to you to be waiting? Is there something else you could be better doing or is there something else that could get you ahead of the line?

#2. Once you know why ask yourself, “is there a more efficient way?” Often we just follow suit, doing what the crowd does. How could you get what you desire quicker?

#3. If waiting is a must how could you use your waiting time most effectively? It is often the case that when we wait we immediately write of the opportunities that might exist. This could include potential to network, enjoy the company you are with or doing some work. Technology allows as to get things done these days while waiting.

#4. Check out what the successful people do. When I say successful I mean to look at those that have avoided the wait. How have they fast tracked the result? Observation is a great thing and you may just discover a few tricks.

#5. Do you really need it? This relates to the first rule and that is the why. How by waiting will this truly make your life better? Is there something that you could be doing to better use your time?

Time is time. We only have so much of it and we all have the same amount of time each day. How we use that time is important. Make sure you use your time to live the life you desire. Don’t wait for what you want!

  • I love sleep, most people I know do. Its nice, its comfortable and mostly it makes us feel good. How could you not love sleep?

Yet so often I hear of people with success claiming to have F-all sleep. They sleep only a few hours a night and operate fine. I call a big bunch of B-S to all that. This may be true for an exceptional few but for the most of us sleep is important.

In my research and conversations with people, clearly more knowledgeable on this topic than me, I have made some really cool discoveries. So I thought I would share them with you.

First let me just say that for everyone no sleep pattern will be identical, woman need more sleep then men, some men perhaps need more sleep than women, some will need more sleep than others depending on what they do in life, and some will find certain sleep hacks more useful than others.

For all that said, here are 5 pretty consistent sleep tips that I think would be adaptable to anyone’s sleeping habits.

As a passionate swimmer, Bonnie became curious about why we swim and how this fascination for swimming is now one of the most popular activities in the world. While our evolutionary ancestors learned to swim for survival many of us now swim for pleasure, and others for exercise and healing. The pure joy of swimming I find rather meditative. In this interview, we discuss Bonnie’s curiosity into our love for swimming and the many associated benefits. (more…)

  • Wisdom Healing Qigong

Master Mingtong Gu is the man who brought a profound 5,000 year old form of Chinese healing to the West in the form of Wisdom Healing Qigong, and is bringing it forward as an vital practice in the time of COVID-19. Today he is here to tell us how Wisdom Healing Qigong can help you resist the COVID-19 virus, decrease your stress, feel more connected in a time of isolation, and even heal faster if you’ve been stricken by the virus.

    Guest Background

As a child growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, Master Mingtong endured hunger, poverty, and a long separation from his birth family. Despite these incredible hardships, he became the first from his village to attend college, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics followed by two master’s degrees, including an MFA from Ohio State University. As a graduate student in art, Master Mingtong discovered the treasures of his own culture through the spiritual iconography of Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism, while practicing yoga, Tantric Buddhism, and qigong.

In 1997, Master Mingtong returned to China for Qigong training under Grandmaster Dr. Pang Ming, a Qigong grandmaster trained in Western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine, and the founder of the world’s largest Qigong hospital. During his training, Master Mingtong observed thousands of cases of chronic and “incurable” diseases being healed at this “medicine-less” Qigong hospital, which treated 200,000+ patients with more than 185 different illnesses, with a 95% effective improvement rate.

Could that medicine-less Qigong facility be duplicated in the West? Sold on its benefits, Master Mingtong dedicates his life to advancing the practice and a place to teach it in the United States. Hence, The Chi Center just outside of Santa Fe NM was founded to bring Wisdom Healing Qigong to thousands of people in the United States, China, and Europe through his retreats, workshops, books, and online and educational programs.

We shouldn’t seek to abandon our search and satisfaction of our primary human needs – food, shelter, belongingness, survival. Self-absorption is allowing the ego to rule and letting it obsess over fulfilling false needs.

The ego attaches itself to trivial matters. It cares not of others or even one’s personal well-being. It concerns itself with misleading ideas on how to protect one’s self-interests and uphold some kind of desirable identity. It does it in ways that are often inconsiderate, lacking compassion and of little long-term purpose. The ego is short-term focused. (more…)

  • Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

In this book, Dr Dan Ariely, A professor of behavioural economics at the Duke University uncovers why humans are predictably irrational. Every day we are responsible for making numerous decisions and what Dan was intrigued by is that despite our assumption that we are smart logical beings, we often make poor decisions that don’t seem logical at all.

Often emotions become entangled in the decisions we have to make. We overvalue, we procrastinate, and we make the same poor decisions time and time again. From his perspective, it seemed humans are highly irrational, hence his research behind this book. (more…)

Leadership is a skill not only favoured to those who manage large teams or coach at the local football club. I’d consider leadership a life-skill. We should teach it to school children along with several other important life-skills essential for living a successful and happy life.

Why? Because at some point in time, we will be required to lead others whether on a large or small scale. More importantly, we are at all times entirely responsible for the leadership of our life.

  • Taping into The Unconscious Mind: A Modern Perspective

    Written by Leigh Martinuzzi

The unconscious mind is said to control the majority of how we act and behave. Some studies suggest as little as 0.08% of what we process happens on the conscious level. The brain is a marvellous organic operating system that sucks a heck of a lot of energy. To operate efficiently, our system runs on a network of memory and prediction. The unconscious is a powerful sub-system of our brain that helps us automate our lives. If that’s the case, it would make sense to learn how do we tap into the power of the unconscious mind?

Cognitive thought process takes place in the conscious part of the human brain and uses a significant amount of energy. We have to focus our attention, think, study and solve problems. Once we do, we can use the stored memory and unconscious operating system to make future predictions. (more…)

  • Our Love with Our Phones

    Written by Leigh Martinuzzi

If like me, you are shocked to hear these figures, I don’t blame you. I remember reading similar stats on the average amount of TV time. In adding it up, you will quickly find that it equates to approximately four or five working weeks. That’s a bloody lot of time!

Imagine what else we could be doing with our time. Imagine if you had four additional weeks a year to do whatever you wished. Would you spend it on your phone? Probably not. I wouldn’t! Of course, this is time accumulated over an entire day. We wouldn’t possibly spend 5 hours back-to-back on our phone, or maybe we would. (more…)

Over the last couple of years, I’ve done a fair bit of research on positivity, however, to be honest, I almost feel as though I was born an optimistic. • Are You Moving Away or Moving Towards?

    Written by Leigh Martinuzzi

At the core, we are biological beings who are driven by pleasure and pain. The fundamental human motivation is survival, what motivates us to fulfil this is to move away from what may be as harmful or limiting and move towards what enhances or nourishes this need. What I’ve learnt is that most of us can either be more strongly influenced by and therefore act upon what we wish to avoid or what we desire to move towards. What type are you, away or towards?

After doing some research on this topic, I feel that I have a towards personality. As for my wife, I think she’s an away type. It is not a representation of good or bad, rather it represents why people have different motivations. Ultimately it will affect the way we operate. (more…)

Weaving our hearts deepest desires into our daily lives make us dream and dreaming feels good! It is the source to enhance the flavours of an otherwise bland life.

We are all passionate about various things. Passions that have lived from the time we were toddlers and have since woven into the fabric of our personality and character. • 394: Tasha Eurich - Why Self Awareness is Positively Fundamental in Success in Work & Life

    Summary

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

Dr. Tasha Eurich is an organizational psychologist, researcher, and New York Times bestselling author. With a PhD in organizational psychology, she is also the founder of The Eurich Group, where she’s helped thousands of leaders and teams improve their effectiveness through greater self-awareness.

In her second book, Insight, Tasha delves into the connection between our self-awareness—what she calls the meta-skill of the twenty-first century—and our performance and success, both in and out of the workplace. Fortune calls it a “sprawling exploration of the psychic frailty that leads to self-delusion and self-aggrandizement, and—importantly—a compassionate, helpful guide for avoiding that path (or reversing it).” This forms the basis of our discussion in my interview with Tasha Eurich. Smarter Faster Better: The Transformative Power of Real Productivity By Charles Duhigg

“The choices that are most powerful in generating motivation, in other words, are decisions that do two things: They convince us we’re in control and they endow our actions with larger meaning.”

In Charles Duhigg’s previous book, The Power of Habit, he researched into the reasons why we do what we do through the study of habits. It is brilliantly insightful and provides a framework to better understanding habits and how to form habits in life that are more purposeful.

  • The Fly in the Ear of the Bull

The Fly in the Ear of the Bull

In an interview I heard on the James Altucher Podcast, Yuval Noah Harari made this comment,

“In a way, a terrorist is like a fly that tries to destroy a china shop. The fly is so small and weak. It cannot move even a single teacup. So how does a fly destroy a china shop? The fly finds a bull, gets into the ear of the bull and starts buzzing. The bull becomes so enraged that it loses its temper and destroys the china shop. This is what happened in the middle east over the last 15 years,” Yuval said.

Since then I have found another story about a little fly and a bull. The moral of the story was about one’s self-perceived importance. When the fly attempted to get the bulls attention by buzzing in its ear and landing on it horn the bull simply said, “Little fly, I don’t care if you stay or leave. You are so tiny that your weight does not make any difference to me, so please be quiet and leave me alone.” (more…)

Ambition: Leading with Gratitude by Seth Buechley

“Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principles which direct them.” Napoleon Bonaparte

Seth Buechley is a serial entrepreneur and found ambition very early in life, in his own unique way. Having grown up in a commune he learnt the art of work early on in life. While there are certain negatives of such an upbringing, as he explains, life in the commune developed within him a strong work ethic.

When it comes to ambition and self-motivation I believe that those who are grow up with a solid work ethic benefit greatly. When the reward of the work we do does not directly benefit us it can sometimes be more difficult to take action. (more…)

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

I first read this book in my early adult years. I think my parents purchased for me perhaps because they saw my obsession in money and creating riches. At that time the content struck me as new and very abstract. It was insightful and inspiring yet at times a little over my head. Life moved on and in most part so did the teachings of this book.

Think and Grow Rich is an all-time best seller and the principles it teaches about success in this book are in most part timeless. For those seeking riches in life this is a powerful read with practices that I believe will bring results if followed consistently and correctly. However, it is not only about money creation. I believe it can bring riches to all aspects of life. (more…)

  • A Thought On Self-Sabotage

    A Thought On Self-Sabotage

You know what you want. The Self-knows it. But you also see what you are comfortable with so you choose to do what you know. You have ambitions, you know you’d love to sing and inspire many, jumping like a mad dog from a stage into the crowd, but your consciousness and subconscious has no concept of this.

The subconscious is to be responsible for 95 to 99 percent of all our behaviours. It is controlling us. It brings to our reality what we know and what we believe to know. To believe that we might be a major rock star some day singing from stage to thousands of fans may be hard to grasp. Dreams are always hard to convince ourselves or others of their possibility.

To sit and drink and eat pasta, followed by wine, banter with friends, playing games or watching a movie, now this is familiar. This kind of common behaviours I have no problem in pursuing.

The mind much like the universe attracts to it what it knows. How do you find a way around this? I want to inspire, I want to motivate, I want to be something else, the David Wood, the Tony Robbins, the spiritual wise guy, but I have no idea how. I can learn I can better understand yet I am no nearer that state of being that I desire.

Perhaps this is all that is and will be. I don’t think it is, nor do I wish for it to be, but it just might be. As I look at life as it exists, understanding the history and evolution and human kind, and even experience an ability to manipulate my reality, I know that reality is a creation of the conscious mind.

Law, rules, life, happiness, what is it, and what is my ambition for doing as I desire? It is no more real than the computer than I type on – a mere conjuring of energy, atoms and perception. Maybe more! I cannot be sure.

Science suggests that the idea of “free will” is an illusion. Neurologists have discovered that our behaviours are simply responses to the electro-energy pulses that cause our neurons to fire and us to act. Based on our environment, our past all the way back to our birth and beyond. Our evolutionary genes are also partly responsible.

If this is the case and our life is without choice, then who we are and what does it all mean? If I were to recede, fall back, smoke opium, seek constant pleasure in the attempt to avoid or not to accept displeasure would I be any happier or real? That kind of thought brings me to the ground. I wonder why I don’t seek to drug myself – and then I remember how much more clear and how much more pleasure I have by not drugging myself. I am guilty of over-drinking but not so much anymore. The conditioning of the past is sometimes difficult to clean up. It takes time! Acknowledge this and persist.

It has been said the intoxication much like food, shelter and warmth is a need. The need to detach ourselves from the illusion of Self. Become at one with the universe and see greater truths beyond the mesmerising chaotic state of mind that we as a collective society have become bound.

Throughout our evolutionary process, it seems each advancement that has promised to bring us greater joy and a higher quality of life has also taken away some of our ability to live with freedom, fulfilment and happiness. Our lifestyles are having an impact on our ability to meet our fundamental human needs – growth, health, expression, significance, contribution and love.

It makes sense to me to take drugs. Mind-altering drugs. While I use to think I enjoyed smoking cigarettes it makes less sense to me now. I would be better off smoking something to remove me from my absorption in my Self.

Animals intoxicate. Dolphins eat puffer fish. Elephants, apes, and monkeys get drunk on fermented fruit. Others take ayahuasca. Goats eat magic mushrooms, and wallabies eat poppy seeds. Many animals like to get high! Escaping our Self is not an uncommon notion.

Meditation is perhaps the cleanest and healthiest way to do this. While it is not a process of leaving the body, it is a process of observing and better understanding the mind, the sanctuary in which the concept of Self is formed.

Like free will, however, the Self is also an illusion. The soul, the Self, the why, they do not exist, and yet we can all relate to some form of them. It feels like we have a choice or free will in life. Just as it feels as if we are the drivers of the Self that propels us on our unique paths in life and differentiates us from others. It gives us a sense of separation, and maybe that is part of the cause for some of our suffering.

Some issues may arise from accepting determinism a belief that there is no free will. To acknowledge that there is no Self might seem liberating, but how might it be damaging to the quality of life we live?

If you are not responsible for your actions, if you have no choice, if who you are and who you will become is outside your control then why do anything at all? Living with such notions will kill ambitions, motivation and inspiration to search for meaning in life. An attachment to an identity of Self creates meaning in life and at the same time can lead to greater suffering.

Such belief will also dull our senses to the experience of life through a lack of effort to experience more. It will limit us in our pursuit of self-progression. We will become less grateful, less willing, less giving, less creative, less caring, less moral, less relevant. Only the last of these may bring some benefits for I think it is when we let go of the importance and attachment to the Self we can truly be free. As for the rest, they will only bring about greater unhappiness in life.

Self-sabotage is the will to damage, destroy or obstruct our own lives. Why would any of us wish to block the paths of our journey forward in life, it seems ludicrous but is often the case. We know what we want but what stops us from getting it? Resources, time, knowledge or skill? Is it any of these things?

Resources are abundant and more accessible than ever. Time is limited and decreasing every single moment, so waiting is not a good idea. If anything the knowledge of this should be our greatest motivation to get out of our way and take action towards living our dreams. Right now you have the most time you ever will so use it wisely and use it with great purpose.

Knowledge and skill can be learned, and in the age of information, we are surrounded by it. It might be that the only thing holding us back from progressing and living the life we desire is the Self or more specifically the attachment to a particular identity of Self.

If our actions are constantly being predicted based on our past perhaps what we do next is out of our control. Our unconsciousness may be keeping living in the environment and state of being that we are familiar. How can we influence all of this? The best way I know of is by becoming more aware of the mind.

If neurons fire based on our past experiences what if we manipulate them towards how we wish to act in the future by pushing ourselves into new and unfamiliar experiences? I think we can.

“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe it achieves, whatever you think about the most you become.” Napoleon Hill

First, we have to stop taking life so seriously. Relax! Your survival and my survival is worth caring about, but we are no more important or separate from the grand cosmos than a blade of grass or grain of sand. Acknowledging this is useful. If you find it hard then look into the night sky and try to find the reason why we are more important than anything else that does or may exist out there.

How we wish to live and breathe through what we do matters. So do the experiences we have and how we feel. Doing good and avoiding actions that may cause ourselves or others suffering. That stuff is important. After we go, and death is common to us all, we take nothing with us. All that remains is what we have given in life. And we are best able to give when we stop our self-sabotage.

Secondly, we must better understand the Self. Meditation and mindfulness practices will allow you to assess the mind and contemplate life and in practice, it will have significant benefits. With this kind of understanding, you will better understand why you do as you do, why others do as they do, why things exist as they are. It will allow you to appreciate the moment as it is and avoid the traps and discomfort of the past or the future that do not exist.

Finally, create the new comfort that you desire by moving beyond your current comfortable states. If what keeps us where we are is the fear of stepping out of our comfort zone what happens if we change those fears by stepping into these new dimensions.

Step up on a stage and sing to crowds and see what happens to the subconscious mind. Influence our realities by taking action towards the dreams we have, and we will experience the change of the mind and how it goes about creating and interpreting the reality we live.

Self-sabotage is real. I am an example of this. Too often I stand in my way, blocked by my fears. I resonate with a sense of Self but know it does not bind me unless I allow it to. I have seen how by chasing down new experiences I have been able to manipulate this image of Self and with that I’ve been able to move towards living the life I desire. An attachment to a Self that I create is restricting to my progress. Let it go!

It has been with greater awareness I have been able to understand myself better, my weaknesses and self-sabotaging tendencies. In waking up, we can free ourselves from our self-imposed limitations so that I can mend, heal, improve and progress to live life as we wish.

  • Simplified Living for a Simplified Life: A Process for Creating More

Simplified Living for a Simplified Life: A Process for Creating More

Recently I found myself a little overwhelmed in life. This isn’t the first time. Life became more chaotic than was necessary. The interesting thing about accumulation and consumption is that it is gradual. Like a ninja in the night, you aren’t aware he’s there until – boom! It stabs you from behind, knocking you down almost in one swift blow.

Ok, perhaps I am being a little melodramatic. The truth is I am not alone. Many people in society suffer with this overwhelm from the pressures system of society place on us. None of us are forced to live in such a way, we are not classified officially as slaves, so why do we allow it to consume us. It is like an unwritten law or expectation. It consumes our soul. It consumes the beauty of our existence.

Consumption is rampant within society. Humans are addictive beings and when something makes us feel good, we crave more and slowly, or sometimes quickly, our consumption increases. It is easy to look at the material possessions and products that we consume as the problem however it goes beyond this. We become consumed by anything that “uses up” our resources including our time.

Whatever consumes us and is non-conducive to the importance of our existence I consider unhealthy. What I am marvelled by is how easy it is to become consumed. I am fascinated also by how negligent humans have become as a race to effects of consumerism. Not only do we accept it as a normal part of existence we worship it.

If aliens were to visit I wonder how we would appear to them. Like slaves? I understand drug addiction because I have been a drug-addict. As I look at the other activities society is consumed by I am not sure that there is great difference. Sure the ultimate effects of such activities may differ, like smoking – perilous!

Here is a thought, if consumption takes the joy away from this existence of life, if it shortens our time, if it causes suffering in our lives is it any different from a drug that may kill us? Is a smoker any worse off than a person addicted to sugar or a man who watches 5 hours of TV a day for now noticeable gain? Something to ponder.

Let’s pause and do some quick calculations. The average person is said to watch 5 hours of TV per day. Over a year that equates to 1,820 hours or 75 days. That is about one-fifth of a year dedicated to something that may not give us any significant gain. It can have the reserve effects of progress. Over the course of a lifetime, let’s say that’s 70 years, that is a massive 14 years watching TV. Wow!

I suggest that if it feels good do it. If you can see the benefits continue. I do not suggest that TV is evil, it can be entertaining and relaxing at times, it’s consumptive qualities are. Here is the fact with consumption, it affects our brain and neural paths to make us think we enjoy it. Nicotine has this affect to make us think we enjoy smoking but really, what is the joy from inhaling poisonous, bad tasting smoke into our lungs?

If something consumes us we must ask ourselves why and what is the greater benefit of such activities or behaviours. It is essential that we look beyond any immediate or false pleasures we associate with such activities. In most part it is just our conditioned mind having been brainwashed for days, weeks or years that makes us think its pleasurable even though it isn’t. For others it may actually be pleasurable yet because we are naturally short sighted, not being able to see too far into the future, we fail to realise the long-term effects such activities might have.

Dig deep to finding the real reason such activities consume you. I do not know the meaning of life but I have an opinion. I read somewhere that the purpose of life is the purpose of life. Simple yet perhaps true! I believe life is living with deep happiness. This requires the removal of suffering and to experience this existence in a way that makes us feel good, as best we can.

True happiness therefore is not a result of an activity that brings momentary pleasure to help mask suffering we may be experiencing. Suffering is self-created, agree or not, all suffering stems from one’s mind and the mind is the only place that we have absolute control. And I suggest one route cause is due to the consumption obsession society that we live in.

There is not one way to live life. Actually, let me restate that, there is only one way and that is to follow the path on your unique journey in life. To do this I believe we need to simplify our lives. If we can find ways to simplify how we live I believe we can actually create more.

For me what life boils down to is to make the best use of the time I have. Not to “use up” my time on wasteful activities that bring me no greater level of happiness. Time effectiveness is the ability to extract true purpose out of each moment. Therefore, if an activity or behaviours that is consuming in nature does not bring with it greater purpose, as it relatives to the individual, it needs to be disposed of.

I was knocked down, blindingly so from the accumulation of all the things that have been consuming me and my time. For someone that considers himself very self-aware I beat myself up as to why I’ve let this happen again. Consumption is deceptive. The addictive nature of the things we do make us believe we want more. They have a lure that can be so attractive and without conscious thought we swallow the lure and let it take us for a ride. I don’t want to be the catch of the day!

Not so long ago I released myself from the grips of material possessions. We made a move to a new country and in doing so sold much of what we owned. We still have some furniture and belongings stored in a container with the purpose so that if we do return home we don’t have to go out and buy more stuff. Other than that however for now I live a very minimalistic life.

I have things that are more out of necessity than desire. It surprising how little one really does need to live the life they desire. I don’t suggest that nice luxuries are evil. Some things do bring one a level of deep contentment. I know what I need and it’s not that much. It has been a gradual process and with practice I have become less a consumer of material things. It is very liberating.

The area that I realise that I must work on now is the other tasks and activities that consume my time. It was an accumulation of all the tasks and activities that I shoved into my schedule that lead to me overwhelm and burnout. I wasn’t a wreck rather I was feeling more anxious. Moments became less enjoyable as I ambitiously tried to navigate my way through the clutter of tasks that I put on my plate.

I am aware that we don’t need to rely on a disaster to occur before we consume less. Change doesn’t require us to “hit rock bottom.” We can look at our purchases as easily as we can look at our daily lives and activities with logic and ask ourselves, what has meaning? What can I remove? If you don’t have this level of awareness it is likely because you are so consumed by everything that infiltrates your life that there is simply a lack of time to be aware.

The process of simplification actually creates space to become more aware. In developing one’s awareness, we become more clear on what is essential and important in our lives and what is not. Question yourself and don’t be afraid to challenge an existing belief. It is likely such a belief is false and created from such consumptive behaviour in the first place. Awareness allows room for us to ask and reflect on important questions.

Ask yourself this, at the end of my life will removing this procession or activity from my life really matter? If you still find it hard to let go or grasp the concept of what truly matters in life go search YouTube for ‘planets size comparison’ videos. It helps me put things into perspective to how truly small I am. It helps me better understand what is important and what is not.

I am a big dreamer and very ambitious person. I have goals and things I want to achieve but I don’t wish to live this experience with suffering or regret. In not knowing when it may all end I simply want to be happy. I have discovered over several years, and still discovering that a simplified life actually creates more. We have all heard the saying that “less is more.” I believe this has some truth.

To live more simply and create a simplified life we first have to become aware. Realise our consuming behaviours and activities and then start with one small step to change/remove some of them. There are many methods and simple ideas that I will share with you in an upcoming article to assist you. Be mindful that how I simplify my life may not be the best or only method for you. If they assist and offer some value, then great.

As I have said before life is complex but this doesn’t mean how we live life needs to be complicated. It is human tendency to complicate things. The condition of consumption creates complexity. Find way to simplify life and one will find an increases abundance of everything that is truly important.

If you are in search of assistance to bring back balance and simplify your life please feel free to reach out to me and schedule a consultation call. It’s a free half hour call and if it may provide some benefit and value.

  • What makes the other person in a relationship feel greater will ultimately be the thing that takes you to the next level. This is a concept that can be applied to any relationships in life. What benefits one often will benefit the other.

In nature this is called Mutualism – the way two organisms of different species exist in a relationship in which each individual benefits from the activity of the other. More on this thought here.

What’s is life without relationships. Lonely, cold and depressing and that too is not necessarily great for our own state of being nor is it conducive to our ability to continually progress and to reach our best potential.

  • The World Doesn’t Revolve Around Me? by Anna Sheinman

The World Doesn’t Revolve Around Me? by Anna Sheinman

I had so many plans for 2015. I was going to ski in Vail, adopt another dog and get into the best shape of my life. However, 2015 had different plans for me. In fact, the universe forgot to revolve around my plans altogether.

C’est la vie – That’s life and it falls apart at times

I had a nasty skiing accident in February 2015. As a result, my knee got busted and a blood clot invaded one of my veins. At the same time, my dad got really ill and died in 2015. Consequently, I couldn’t fly to attend my father’s funeral.

Under those circumstances, I was grief-stricken. Not to mention that I wasn’t able to walk or to make myself a cup of coffee.  For my strong and independent psyche, this was an equivalent of slow death.

Even though, I was very fortunate to have my best friend – my husband by my side,  I needed to find my own strength.  I was sad and cried. I found comfort in a thought that my dad is no longer suffering.  Luckily, my dad and I had a chance to reconcile our differences and spent some time together before he passed away.

Likewise, not much was to be done with my knee for either. So I settled into a nice comfy chair with a good book and let the time pass.  Hence, I found comfort in food, books and writing.

Surely, time passes and heals. It’s been a few years since these devastating events. My knee is practically as good a new. And I went to visit my dad’s grave to put a closer to his passing.

After all, 2015 taught me many great lessons. In this blog, I would like to share my top five tools which helped me to bounce back.

    1) Start a Journal

Journaling is an ancient tradition that dates back to at least 10th century Japan. Successful people throughout history kept journals.  Oscar Wilde, 19th century playwright, said:

“I never travel without my diary.  One should always have something sensational to read on the train.”

University of Texas at Austin psychologist and researcher James Pennebaker said that regular journaling strengthens immune cells. He believes that writing about stressful events helps you come to terms with them.

In fact, writing is my number one tool.  I keep track of my feelings, food intake, exercise regimen, dreams, fears, gratitude and priorities. My daily journal is my best friend and my shrink.  Ultimately, writing helps me to keep track of all aspects of my life. It makes it easier to let go of distractions and prioritize important work. I keep all my notes in the excel spreadsheet. Generally, I spend about 10 minutes in the morning and about 15 minutes in the evening to go over my day.  In addition, I write down my yearly and monthly agendas.

First thing to remember, make it simple and consistent. Forget about spelling and punctuation. Privacy is key if you are to write without censors. Write quickly, as this frees your brain from “should” and other blocks to successful journaling.  Start with a pen and paper or use my template.

What are you waiting for? Grab a pen and start writing!

    2) Get more Sleep

Most of us are sleep deprived. As a result, this deprivation will lead to obesity and depression. Start prepping for sleep as soon as you can. It can be 30 minutes to two hours. In fact, Brian Johnson talks a lot about a digital sunset. Basically, you completely shut-down your electronic input and gently remove all electronics from your bedroom some time before you go to sleep.

With this in mind, I typically spend some time with my husband. Follow with my nightly journal log reflecting on the day and the next day to come.  Finally, I put my phone on airplane mode and turn all my devices down.

What can you give up to gain more hours of sleep?

    3) Eat Clean

Based on numerous studies the plant-based diet is the optimal for health and well-being. However, it is very easy to overeat even with healthy foods. I gained over 10 lbs in less then a year simply by not paying attention. Overeating leads to obesity and causes inflation and arthritis.

As doctor Chris Centeno  noted that obesity is linked to knee arthritis. In summary, when you eat more your body’s ability to turn off the hunger switch is disabled and you produced hormone called leptin. You hunger switch is overwritten and your brain can’t differentiate from “hunger” to “full” signal and you tend to eat more and more contributing to this vicious cycle.  In fact, based on a number of studies, there is a direct correlation between leptin levels in the blood and arthritis. And this was independent of how much someone weighed. In addition, hormones that are the causes of obesity seem to act negatively on cartilage health. The good news is that  you reduce your leptin levels and therefore the potential of leptin knee arthritis by short-term fasting (24-72 hours).

Provided my state of mind, it took me some time to come back to balanced eating. In fact, the Rich’s Roll podcast interview with Ray Cronise and regenexx research changed the way I eat.  As a result, I was able to loose 10 lbs and keep it off.

So, take small steps on daily basis. You can cook your own meals instead of going out. Fill your plate with veggies and fruit. Get rid of the sugars, processed foods and reduce your portion sizes. In addition, remember that every time you over stuff that belly, you also hurting your cartilage!

What can you do today to improve your diet?

    4) Get Moving

We all know the benefits of exercise. I have a somewhat rigid routine  which includes a lot of knee rehabilitation exercises, high intensity workout, finishing up with light yoga.  In fact, inability to move was very challenging, but I kept focusing on what I can do. A few weeks after the injury, I was able to do some core and arm work and over the course over the next weeks increase the intensity. Start slow, commit to moving on daily basis, no time for the gym – work out at home. There is so much to try: 12 – minute beginner boot-camp, Pilates at home, Yoga, go for a walk, take stairs, keep moving. To avoid injuries start small and build up. At no time you should be in pain.

Need motivation? Exercise turns back the genetic clock, keeps you younger  and make you smarter!

How can you incorporate more movement into your life?

    5) Practice Meditation

There are no excesses, meditation needs to happen on daily basis.
As Jonathan Haidt noted in his book “The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom“:

“Suppose you read about a pill you could take once a day to reduce anxiety and increase your contentment. Would you take it?” Haidt inquires. “Suppose further that the pill had a great variety of side effects, all of them good: increased self-esteem, empathy and trust; it even improves memory. Suppose, finally, that the pill is all-natural and costs nothing. Now would you take it? The pill exists. It is called meditation.”

There are so many options to choose from, try different techniques and remember you can’t fail at meditation. From my understanding mediation is not about turning your thoughts off, but rather becoming a non-judgmental observer. Do your research, if you find a technique that resonates with you, give it at least 21 days before you move on to something else.

My meditation practice is about 10 minutes a day.  I start with some muscle release and basic movement coordinated with breath. The actual meditation is simply focused breathing. Sometime I visual a mountain and use mantras. Basically, the key is to keep it simple and consistent.

    No more excuses, just meditate!

    6) Find Joy

I love hiking and being outdoors, exploring the woods, climbing the mountains. My whole world was crumbled when I couldn’t walk, but I also love to read. During my debilitating injury I’ve discovered audio-books. My grief dissipated as Douglass Adams told me about life, universe and everything else…I a big science-fiction fan. What makes your heart smile? Whether it is walking in the park, dancing or reading a good book. Allocate some time in your schedule for this activity.

To conclude, life can really kick you in the knee sometimes.

However, nothing that happens to you is ultimately bad or good.  What you do about it is the only thing that matters. Healing is a choice so is suffering. What would it be?

Thanks for reading, please share your bounce back to life tips!

  • Let Your Heart Be Your Guide to How You Live Your Life

Let Your Heart Be Your Guide to How You Live Your Life

Just like you heart pumps life around the body so does it create thoughts and emotions that direct how we live our life. I believe that my heart has been something I have often left behind in favour of logic or thought that has caused misdirection in my own life. If the heart is the true centre of our thoughts and emotions, and the most direct connection to our soul then perhaps we should listen to it more. If the heart is love, then love I would guess would be a much more powerful guide to one’s life than anything else.

I am no love expert but I know that my heart has been a worthier guide in my life than logic has ever been. Perhaps logic has kept me safe in certain situations and there have been many a time that I’ve done, spontaneously so, actions that haven’t been the wisest. Decisions in life are not always easy. Some people struggle over the decision of what to wear or eat, or how to muster the energy to get out of bed. These can seem like simple decisions to make, yet they can all have consequence to some level in our lives.

  • Book Reflections| The Big Five: Five Simple Things You Can Do to Live a Longer, Healthier Life

The Big Five: Five Simple Things You Can Do to Live a Longer, Healthier Life by Dr. Sanjiv Chopra

I believe we need to keep an open mind in life with everything we approach. This book is one of those. When anyone tells me to do something specific in order to live longer, not that it happens everyday, I don’t jump all in. I instead seek to understand, remain open to the facts and my own experiences, assess and reflect on my own thoughts and assumptions, and then decide on what beliefs I will create.

Dr. Chopra shares five things that we can all do to extend our lives. The include drinking coffee, taking vitamin D, exercising, eating nuts, and meditating. If you have experience with any one of these, you will likely to be able to draw your own conclusions as to the benefits they have in your life. If you are not familiar you may just make assumptions based on your current knowledge level and thoughts. If that is the case this book makes for a very insightful read.

It might sound like I am blowing this book off, I am not. I really enjoyed this read and with my hand on my heart openly admit I have started drinking more coffee as a consequence, and perhaps a few more nuts. In no way does this book promote excess. Actually excess will really be determined by your current level of intake. If you currently drink 10 cups of coffee a day then Dr. Chopra’s view that 4-6 may be beneficial may cause you to reduce your intake. On exercise also, he doesn’t claim that the more exercise you do the better off you are but that just doping exercise will be beneficial.

Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story by Arnold Schwarzenegger

What a truly amazing life story. If you looked at Arnold’s life now without knowing his story you would not even begin to believe the journey he has taken to get there. This is why I love biographies of successful people, there is so much great insight, learnings and most of all inspiration. If you believe that what you dream is impossible, unreachable, then read this – you may just turn impossible into possible.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria and as a kid had a fairly normal upbringing, at least for the time. Like any young boy he did boy things, tried to impress the girls, looked for adventure, sought passion to sink his teeth into and always looked for way to make a dime. Fast forward to today, Arnold has had an amazing array of success in life.

From the world champion and arguably the greatest bodybuilder of his time, to a number 1 action movie hero, and more recently Governor of California his achievements are none other than grand. They are not everyone’s dreams but none the less they are huge dreams achieved by a guy from a standard upbringing. Not to mention that majority of his success was made in America, a country he immigrated to at age 21 without limited knowledge of the language.

Hustle: The Power to Charge Your Life with Money, Meaning, and Momentum by Neil Patel, Patrick Vlaskovits & Jonas Koffler

To hustle or not to hustle, perhaps there is no in-between. I have my own thoughts on this word and am still not sure if I actually like it. It’s not the word itself  but perhaps the context and manner in which it is used – I think it’s too trendy and can relay an incorrect message. I share my thoughts in this book reflection.

The term hustle to me means to work freaking hard, in a forceful way, to have greater achievement. I believe that if taken too literally it may find people living to viciously in the future and therefor missing our the benefits of being present and now. I also believe that if we enjoy what we do the term loses its meaning. When you do what you love it becomes less forceful, no matter how hard or how long the hours that you dedicate to your art. A Thought on Happiness: Found Internally Not Externally

As I grow and experience this life I gain more happiness. This may not have been the case if I didn’t take my own initiative to make significant change in my life. It is my belief that for many of us as we depart our parents bracing arms and the support of schooling life into a world of independence and adulthood, and as we do we become less happy as time passes.

I have never been happier and while I could list out a number of defining factors and reasons for this the one that infiltrates my thoughts today is that I have become more inwardly focused. This is not from a level of selfishness, quite the contrary actually. I feel as though I have become even more selfless in the focus inwardly on my own happiness.

This is living out a life with regret – one that wasn’t the true path of yourself.

The Gratitude Diaries How a Year Looking on the Bright Side Can Transform Your Life by Janice Kaplan

What does it take to live with gratitude? Surprising very little, other than a dose of of awareness. Being grateful is not something new and the theory of it has been around, as far as I can tell, for aeons. Great philosophers of the past speak on why being grateful is a divine way to live life with greater fulfilment and happiness.

Janice Kaplan decided one New Years Eve that she was going to dedicate the entire year to being more grateful for everything in her life. Simply becoming more aware of all that she has and expressing gratitude for them. What she learns and discovers she share in her book and New York Times bestseller.

The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason

“Advice is one thing that is freely given away, but watch that you only take what is worth having.” George S. Clason

This book is founded on the people of Babylon who were apparently the first people to discover the universal laws of prosperity. The author of this 1926 book discusses the laws that are timeless to this day and are laws that are to assist anyone and everyone in creating, growing and maintaining wealth.

Before I hear you say that people are born into money and others are more fortunate than others, that’s fine and perhaps this than isn’t a book for you nor would be my blog, it may just create some negative and burning emotions within you and that is not my intention.

It is true that from long, long ago man has decided that life was to be lived with a high standard and since we have always continually acted to improve our own prosperity. We have also continually increased quality of living as a race, and more recently we endeavour to improve mother earth.

  • “Trust is the glue of life. Its the most essential ingredient in effective communication. Its the foundational principle that holds all relationships.” Stephen Covey

Trust: a firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something.

In this 3 minute thought I review my thoughts on trust. I highlight that trust has amazing powers. It is often hard for us to trust everything.

If you can practice trust to a point where you can trust everything great benefits will come.

Trust is a higher and more powerful energy than distrust. By focusing on trust you will remove distrust, you will attract more energy fields that contain trust- like trusting people and less likely to receive distrust.

Start with trust, don’t start with distrust. Here are my thoughts, peace, passion and purpose.

  • “Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” Jim Rohn

In todays solo show I discuss change. I wish to open your mind to the benefits of change and why we should embrace and encourage change rather than resist change. I am very fond of change.

Recently I made massive change in my life and that involved moving to Japan. Yes that’s right- I moved to Japan. Family to follow. This made me think a lot about change and why I seem to continually put myself into these situations.

I struggled with the change but being a change lover I have managed to accept, embrace work with the change to maximum effect. I hope you can get something out of this podcast and would encourage you to invite more change into your life.

  • Organize Tomorrow Today: 8 Ways to Retrain Your Mind to Optimize Performance at Work and in Life by Dr. Jason Selk

“A good plan violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan executed next week.” George S. Patton

As pitched on the back cover of this book, is the idea that success is spawned out of having and maintaining effective habits rather than innate talents. When I think on this and ponder what this truly means, I feel refreshed.

Isn’t it great to know that we can all create our own successful lives by simply adopting effective habits? Well perhaps not always so simple but certainly achievable none the less.

In this book the authors discuss the idea of planning or organizing tomorrow, today. Again simple in thought and theory yet to put into practice is challenging and certainly something I must improve on myself. Yet the benefits can and will be significant.

  • Tim Ferris is one of my mentors and as a matter of fact his face stares at me from my vision board hanging on my wall in front of me. Why do I look at this man instead of the thousands of others that I am sure have value to offer? It’s because I admire a few very simple traits he holds and shares very openly.

I am sure there are qualities that perhaps I don’t see and traits that perhaps don’t gel with my own but hey, that’s just life. The reason why I have many mentors and not just the one is because I can take a little bit of something from each of them to make me a little more improved.

That is my goal in life, self-improvement, to continually learn and improve myself each day until my body escapes me or until I perhaps escape my body.

So what are the three things I admire most about Tim?

  • A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle

The sub-tittle captures the essence of the message in this book and that is to awaken by bringing around a shift in consciousness. It is an extension upon his work from his earlier book The Power of Now. I have written a book review on this also that may be worth a read – essentially it was a spiritual insight into the benefits that can come by being present in the moment.

In this book I was captured from the start. I actually begin with the audio book but found the narration rather bland and knew that I would absorb much more if I read the book.

  • The Freedom of Life Without Choice

We all have choice in our lives, some more than others yet I have come to realise that it is choice that is actually not more freeing yet rather more restrictive. Without choice we have much greater freedom!

There are other benefits that come with less choice and to think about it this actually leads us on a path to freedom. Everyday we wake in the morning and are faced with so many choices, what to wear, what to eat, to exercise or not to exercise, whether to go to work or not. Choices can make us less effective.

Think about the choices you have daily that require no thought because the choice is a daily part of your life, a ritual or habit. Brushing you teeth before you go to bed is something many adults do without hesitation, we don’t allow the thought of the option not to brush but it is available. (more…)
