  • A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts about it.” Eckhart Tolle

The sub-tittle captures the essence of the message in this book and that is to awaken by bringing around a shift in consciousness. It is an extension upon his work from his earlier book The Power of Now. I have written a book review on this also that may be worth a read – essentially it was a spiritual insight into the benefits that can come by being present in the moment.

In this book I was captured from the start. I actually begin with the audio book but found the narration rather bland and knew that I would absorb much more if I read the book.

This is certainly a philosophical book with many references to real incidents, occurrences, people and stories that help illuminate the messages shared throughout.

Eckhart’s message revolves around our ego and how by becoming aware and losing attachment to ones ego can we transcend into a state of consciousness, that will allow us to live with life’s purpose.

Our ego is all controlling and in this life can be seen as the cause of much unhappiness, anger, and jealousy within ourselves and within the world, one which is full of pain and suffering. The attachment to ones ego is therefore not only dysfunctional within us but also within society and the wider world.

He breaks the book up into sections to help explain the ego and the current state of humanity and than takes us on a journey to understanding the many faces of the ego. For example he discusses the pain body and how this affects our presence.

He then delves into messages on breaking free of the ego, finding inner peace and awareness of who you are, and how to discover your inner space and inner purpose.

The book is thick of thought provoking insight and is sometimes so thick to grasp it requires a second and third read. For much of it, I still am trying to get my head around.

However in each section I found deeper understanding into the power of the ego, a deeper connection and awareness of my self and how my behaviour is often a reflection of the ego, and also how my belief of my Being within this world reflects to my attachment to thought and form.

In reading this book I have found a shift in my own consciousness.

Sounds too good to be true, right?

This book is certainly within my top 10. In summary it has given me greater insight into life and my purpose. It has allowed me to understand the power of being present and with purpose in the now, and has certainly allowed me to walk away with a better connection to ‘thought’ and how it relates to my peace with existence in this life.

The final message Eckhart touches on in this book is the three modalities. These modalities can align our lives with the creative power of the universe; they are, acceptance, enjoyment and enthusiasm. If in each moment you are not living in alignment with either of these modalities you need to stop what you’re doing and make change.

For so many of us including myself we venture through this reality in disconnect, with our true inner purpose and without consciousness that allows us to live with connection to these modalities. For me that is a true tragedy and one which I wish to change in myself and to also inspire change in others.

I encourage you to read this book as I think it’s a powerful piece of work that truly will assist you to awaken your life’s purpose.
