Do We Have Choice Over The State of Our Being?

Do you think we all have choice as to our state of being? Is how you want to be in life ultimately our individual choice or are we subject to our circumstance or the true nature of things? As I ponder on this I ask myself is there a difference in choice in life and free will? Does free will exist?

I believe that regardless of our circumstance, situation, up-bringing of indeed our genetic make-up we all have choice as to how we be in life. This does not mean we have choice necessarily in where we live, the quality of life we have, or the people that exist within our lives. It does not mean we have control over time, let alone the time we have within this body that we’ve been given. In my thought it is about choice of how we are internally despite all that exists externally.

If being is a state of mind then does it not make sense that we are in control of that state. Is there external control, force or even biological influence over how our mind thinks? Is how we think a direct cause of influence on our state of being, our state of existence?

The mind connects with the body and our body to the outside world. Anything that impacts us externally, often through our human senses, will be therefore directly processed and interpreted by the mind. This highlights that our mind creates our reality. While for much of how our mind processes and interprets the messages our body receives from the external world remains common among us all how it affects our state of being is individually very unique.

There are certain ways our bodies react based on the interaction with stimuli within its current environment that cannot be controlled. If you are cut by a blade you will bleed. If your nose smells something it smells. It your eyes see something they see. Our human senses are the way our body communicates with the mind.

You may flinch if you are frightened but if you were fully aware would that still be the case. I think we jump in fright when our senses are not prepared nor awake. Yet ultimately whatever the situation or state of awareness our senses react to the world which we are without control, unless of course a particular sense does no longer function.

I believe we do have choice about how our mind interprets the information the body sends to it and therefore I believe we do have ultimate choice in who we choose to be. If happens is an ultimate state of being that we all desire, how much is our own doing?
