  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

The word alchemy comes from the Greek word Khemeia that means “art of transmuting metals.” This is apparently an ancient art that people have been trying to work on for millennia with little success. Particularly the attempt to turn common metals into gold. This book is an inspiring story of a Shepard boy, Santiago, on his journey of life and like alchemy awakens his essence and turns it to gold.

It has been a book on me to read list for some time and I am glad to have finally read it. Actually, it was one I was going to read but instead got an Audible copy to listen to. This book is a very suitable book to listen to in audio form as it tells a story. Non-fiction books and other educational books often are better in hard copy. It was also narrated by Jeremy Irons – a very suitable and enjoyable voice to listen to. You can 2 Free audio books when you trial Audible here today.

I haven’t read anything else by the Author, Paulo Coelho, however I was impressed by the way he integrated such powerful and timeless wisdom into a story. Using story is perhaps the best way to send a message. It makes the read smoother and the insights shared more absorbable.

Santiago is on a journey to find treasure like no other. Along the way he meets The Alchemist. A sorcerer of kinds. An elderly man that has great wisdom and skill in understanding how the universe works.

The soul of the universe is much the same as the soul within each of us, both continually seek to evolve, improve and to find greater meaning and purpose in this existence. If we can better listen within we will better realise our souls purpose. Paulo uses omens to communicate this insight. An omen is an event of happening that can be taken as a sign for things to come.

To live a life more fully and to really unleash the power that already exists within we must listen to our hearts. It is then the omens, the opportunities, unfold as we progress on our own journey. I feel this message is where a secret to living this life lay. That is, it is on our own unique journey that we will better hear our inner voice and better notice, understand and act on the omens that arise.

Paulo shares many great wisdoms and timeless truths of existence within the pages of this book. The greatest message is however that’s the magic of life is held within our dreams. Keep your dreams alive. Connect with them and allow them to flourish and evolve. And with courage and commitment take action to pursue them.

This is when life truly unfolds as it is meant to. When we live our own legend that is when the we find greater joy in life. And while the treasure at the end of our pursuit may be grand it is in the pursuit that the greater happiness is found.

Another powerful lesson shared can be taken from this line, “Just as the current of a river buries treasure so will it uncover it.” The one thing that will hold many of us back is the fear of failure. When we walk our own path this risk appears higher compared to walking the common paths that exist in our society.

Life will never be fully realised by those that succumb to their fears. Doors of opportunities will go unnoticed to those without the courage to get back up again. When life become stagnant, a level beyond comfort, that is a sign for us to shake the dirt from our coat so that we can once again rise and walk into our potential.

As Paulo says, “when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Just as the beauty is found in a grain of sand so is it found within each of us. It is often that we just don’t spend the time notice. As you create this awareness and allow it to transform into dreams and turn dreams into action the universe will give you the support you require to take you on the journey that you are meant to travel.

We are all created from the same source and that has been evolving for millions of years. It is for this reason we should also be kind on ourselves as we continue on the journey towards living our legend.

As also we are turned away by ill fate, or cower in the face of evil so can we be displaced in the face of fortunes. A win should never be a signal that we can stop doing the work. Good fortune should be celebrated but not used to stop us from progressing towards our dreams.

Comfort can be found easily and just as easily be taken from us. For any comfort that we may find we may always return to. If it is not there when we seek it again, if we desire to seek it again, then that comfort wasn’t meant to be. The real treasure is found in continual pursuit of your treasure, your dreams and for that we need to continue to learn, continue to love, continue to listen and continue to take action on walking the path that is true to one’s Self.

This is a great book. A message that I love. Inspiration that I feel we all must listen to because as I have stepped away from the trappings of society, and derailed myself from the tracks that were not my own have I found greater fortune. A journey towards our own legend guided by our dreams creates much greater freedom, fulfilment and happiness. And what is life about?
