  • 231: Nic Gregoriades & Thomas Faustin-Huisking| The Boys From The Digital Communion Podcast

    Summary

Nic Gregoriades is a martial artist and spiritual explorer from Cape Town, South Africa. In 2003 he moved to London to earn his black belt in Jiu Jitsu. There he founded the popular martial arts community, The Jiu Jitsu Brotherhood and became the first person to be awarded the black belt by the legendary Roger Gracie.

In late 2012 he took a trip to the amazon to drink the sacred plant medicine, Ayahuasca, which profoundly affected his world view and caused him to drastically change his life path. He now travels the world teaching Jiu Jitsu, studying yoga and learning about the human experience.

I hope you enjoy our very open, authentic, deep and at times of the rails discussion. I would summarise our chat by this – “with awareness comes great wisdom and with great wisdom can we master our life.”

    Key Take Outs

    • Be open and create greater awareness. This to me is a key to a greater life journey. The more open you are the greater your awareness the better you will be able to figure life out. The more you reflect the quicker this process may come however no matter the rate on mastering ones potential I believe that awareness with effort will create greatness.
    • The mind and its beliefs. Your mind will have beliefs usually that revolve around the culture in which you exist, the society, morals and values that are apparent to your upbringing. These will form much of your current conditioned self. If you are not mindful they can limit what you may achieve in a lifetime and more importantly how you live life. The best way to understand your beliefs is by questioning them. Why do they exist? Reflect on this in you may open yourself to more truth and meaning.
    • The path is our own to walk. You can follow a religion or particular set of beliefs and moral behaviours – a defined way to live life and while this may assist in saving energy that could be focused better in other areas of life you may miss out on deeper truths that could lead to even greater discoveries. I do not suggest that following a religion is restrictive, it may be more freeing, but self-discovery leads to deeper insights in life, religion may assist with creating such insights but they may also restrict the direction these insights take us.

What does living life with passion and purpose mean? Do we all have a why?

Nic: “Why do humans always think life needs to have meaning?” His realisation is that, “I don’t know why I am supposed to be here, I just know I am supposed to be here. If you weren’t you wouldn’t be here.” There needs to be nothing else other than that reason and you can do whatever you want with that.

Thomas: Yes, we do all have a why but there is this assumption we have to have it all figured out at a young age. I think it is essential to try many things. This will give you much more satisfaction along the journey of self-discovery and creating more meaning to this life. It will teach you a lot and get you on the right path.
