  • 106: Eric Zimmer | Podcaster, The One You Feed, Wolf -Theory, Hurdles & Overcoming Obstacles

    Summary

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

Eric is the creator and host of The One You Feed Podcast and a lifestyle coach. He has taken his journey in life through some very tough times including alcohol addiction and becoming homeless. It is through these challenges he has learnt a heck of a lot and now wishes to share those with you.

He is a big believer in the wolf theory that he describes as that we become the one we feed. We both have both the good and bad wolf within us and if we feed the good wolf we become the good wolf – feed the bad wolf and we become the bad wolf.

In this episode we chat about addiction, the reason for it, the why, and also advice, tips and thoughts on how to overcome it. Noting that dramatic change is possible. We chat about the good and bad wolf and whether there is a need for balance. We also look at podcasting and the importance of starting and have a deeper reason to wanting to start other than something superficial or external.

I really hope you enjoy my conversation with Eric. If you would like to reach out to either of us please do and please leave your comments below. Until next time, peace, passion and purpose.

    Key Take Outs

“I can’t really control the outcomes but I can control what I do.”

    • Dramatic change is possible. Despite the turmoil and struggles you have in life, even from your lowest of lows you can turn your life around. It takes the ability to be aware of where you are, finding help and of course taking action, even a little bit at a time.
    • Giving up bad habits. We discuss the path to giving up habits in a 3-step process. Frist become aware, secondly find pain in the old way and pleasure in new activities, and perhaps most importantly – find help.
    • Like the way you feel. One of the issues with taking drugs and limiting yourself in anyway in life is that you don’t like yourself. You have become so overwhelmed by your thought of who you are that you lack self-respect. This leads to damaging behaviours.
    • Powerful stories. Amazing change can happen through inspiring stories. It is usually easy to overcome struggle and diversity by listening and sharing stories with those who have gone through similar diversity. Stories are powerful ways to influence, inspire and motivate others and within them are great lessons to be had.
    • Good and bad wolf. This is a story about what inner soul we wish to feed. Are you feeding your good wolf or are you feeding the bad one? We all have them both and the efforts of success and even normality in life we need to favour the good and reduce feeding the bad wolf.
    • The middle way. There is often need for balance in life and the balance that you desire will be unique to you. Moderation is great is you can handle it and if its conducive to how you wish to live your life. Excess can be damaging and leave with it disatisfaction and tastes of regret.
    • Congruent with your inner self. The feeling you get when you are not congruent with your authentic self is never a great one. We all experience this at times, when what we do doesn’t align with our life values. Obey your values and you will live with greater happiness and also be more purposeful with your time.
    • Know why. This is the ultimate path to freedom and success. Know why and continually ask yourself this question. Why are you doing what you do, why is it important, why is it beneficial, why! If you have great reason in life you will be better able to navigate through the chaos and steer your ship towards those life desires.

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?

Look for what you are interested in and like doing, and do that. Worry less about money and the short-term, and do things with greater meaning.
