  • On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction  by William Zinsser

Zinsser was a master writer. He has written over 18 best sellers and countless of other essays, weblogs, & publications over his lifetime. This book is one that I have many authors recommend reading including Tim Ferris- author of the 4 Hour Work Week.

What I enjoyed about his book is the practical tips, methods and principles that Zinsser shares from the very first page. I was enthralled with his with his ability to communicate his message- educating me while also holding me down. I didn’t want to stop reading.

Some of the principles I have become to understand such as using simplicity in writing and also the need to remove clutter. The principles allow the reader to remain involved without getting distracted or losing any understanding. There were many principles however that were new to me.

He doesn’t seem to miss a thing, or at least if he has- as an amateur writer I am unaware of. He delves into great details and highlighting explanation with examples for clearer understanding when necessary.

The second section to this book focuses on writing for specific genres, for example writing about people, places and even yourself. He shares some very useful information here with many examples, also. I would suggest this section, part 3, is should be read if curiosity strikes you however it time is lacking perhaps just focus on those genres that relate to you.

Finally, he wraps it up beautifully with discussion on attitudes.  Lesson on how to communicate your voice and to remain your authentic self- I believe the importance of this is paramount. He also brings in points on editing and publishing and why selling yourself out shows a lacking of passion for your own work.

For me personally I enjoyed reading on correct grammatically usage- certainly an area I lack strength. Further more I believe that while perfectionism can be detrimental to anyone’s career it is my ‘laziness’, out of hope to save time, that I neglect to check and rewrite my work. I am aware of this yet still so often neglect to get into this discipline.

For many of the other techniques I can easily understand and if not already will be able to implement in my writing. What resonates with me is that writing with your voice, from a place of truth and that keeping it simple without clutter and with style will allow your audience to really connect with your message.

My final thought is that it is through practice that we learn, grow and become masters. This is a reason I push myself to write everyday, even on those days that I wish not to. Is my writing perfect, you can be the judge on that, I believe there is always room for improvement!

Reading, learning, awareness and practice will always assist to improve. All journalists, bloggers, authors should read this and it may even be beneficial to high school English education.
